The year 2021 has brought on new working environments across the world for companies. As people adjust to the unique atmosphere of either working from home or hybrid, it could be hard for a leader to lead in this unknown territory. Leaders will need to adjust their ways of thinking about successfully leading their new teams post-pandemic. Here are some ways leaders can successfully lead.
Embrace Flexibility
– Hybrid teams are flexible and offer employees the choice of working from the office or remotely. This working environment is the best of both worlds. Gripping a flexible schedule can be difficult, but understanding and trusting your group gives employees the independence to complete their work regardless of when and where.
– Leadership can have a difficult time understanding and embracing this skill since this is a new way of time management but know that all individuals work differently and are more productive than others.
Keep Tabs on Your Team
– Leading a hybrid team can be difficult, as you could set goals with remote workers and forget to check in on them. Having 1:1 meetings with employees keeps them on track with the project and keeps you in the loop on where they stand.
– Mentoring opportunities can come from discussions in 1:1 meetings or group-based meetings. Open communication with your group is always good to establish when working in a different environment.
– Leadership can still be successful without having to micromanage their teams. Instill trust and open communication within the group.
Acknowledge Work
– Regardless of what working environment employees are in, appreciation is always valued. The ways of acknowledging employees are changing due to virtual working, and leaders need to be ready. They can do so by promoting employees’ work on social platforms to the company.
– Leaders can also praise their employees by discussing with them, and potentially assigning, projects that might interest them and help them grow professionally. This challenges and pushes them out of their comfort zone, ultimately developing your employees for future roles.
– Share feedback from others. Connect with the employee 1:1, recognize their hard work, and know that others appreciate it.
Inclusive Environment
– Inclusion in the workplace is necessary for an employee to be engaged and productive throughout their career. This is where an individual feels that they are welcomed and valued for their contributions to the company.
– Although working from home has boosted productivity by 13%, a Stanford study states that most employees did not receive promotions and feel as if they are “Out of sight and out of mind.”
– Leadership should build an inclusive work environment for their employees by developing mentoring programs with executive leaders and preparing employees for future growth.
It is never easy to lead while in unfamiliar territory. There is not a blueprint on how to do it successfully. Leaders should communicate with their team and embrace that it is a learning experience for all. Great leaders are not born great. They evolve after mistakes, turbulent times, and the understanding that things change. Once a person knows this, they can evolve into their next role.
